About WITS

Founded by Chicagoans Joanne Alter and Marion Stone, WITS began at one urban school in the Cabrini Green housing development, one of the nation's most economically disadvantaged housing projects. Recognizing the importance of one-on-one tutoring for at-risk children, Joanne and Marion saw an overwhelming need for their service; in 1991, WITS was born.

With the help of retirees, homemakers, college students and others, WITS expanded its volunteer force into neighboring schools at the request of teachers and principals. As volunteers spent one morning a week working with elementary students, the word on WITS continued to spread and in 1993, WITS was incorporated.

Today, WITS boasts more than 1,600 volunteers consisting of corporate and government employees, retirees and community volunteers of all ages and backgrounds. Fifteen years after its inception, WITS remains dedicated to training, placing and transporting reading volunteers into Chicago's schools. By tailoring every program to a corporation's needs, WITS makes it easy for corporate America to give back to the community.

Students benefit from consistent, reliable, positive interaction with a caring adult.

Schools and teachers benefit from preventative nurturing and personal attention to at risk youth.

Volunteers benefit from a convenient and personally rewarding volunteer experience.

Business partners benefit from enhanced employee morale and from the positive effects of providing a valuable service to the community.

Our Junior Board

The Junior Board was developed in October 2000 with four main objectives: Operate as a self sustaining Board of WITS; support WITS policies, staff and Board of Directors; create new programs and initiatives for fundraising purposes and community visibility; and assist WITS in achieving fundraising goals.

The original vision has truly come to life over the past two years: The Junior Board's annual BlackBoard Affair events have raised an amazing $100,000 to support the WITS mission, and the Program Committee launched in 2003 a Saturday Volunteer Program with Walsh Elementary School at 2015 South Peoria Street.

If you are a young professional between the ages of 21 and 40 and you want to help make a difference for Chicago Public Schools students, please contact Jenné Myers, Executive Director.

"Linking our students with committed role models, tutors and mentors will help children at every level succeed."

Arne Duncan, CEO, Chicago Public Schools
